Egon Shiele- Self Portrait
In his very recognizable style, Shiele painted himself using a wide array of color and movement. The entirety of the self portrait is made of organic shapes and lines. The face is in an unsettling angle it is very heavy in weight because of its deep colors and position on the painting. There is an obvious horizontal line creating visual direction for the viewer made of the head at the top right leading down the shoulder and shirt, or fabric all the way diagonally down to the left bottom corner of the painting. There is an immediacy of expression in the face as is appears to be both looking and not looking at the viewer . The ample "white" space around the figure creates a balance for the intensity in the figure. There is emphasis on contour, graphic mark, and linearity. There is quite alot of texture in both the figure and the ground ,witch complements the artist "flat" graphic style.
Eva Hesse
This work is made up entirely of curved lines and circles. The piece uses bright pink against neutral tones. The composition is divided by the rounded curved line separating the pink from the textured tan elements of the piece. This leads the viewers eye diagonally down the work. The dark black is a nice complement to the bright light pink giving the work balance, the rod that comes out of the work creates a beautiful shadow line that cuts all the round elements of the work and leads the eye down the piece. The tan parts of the work are beautifully carved creating an array of organic lines that surround and emphasize the movement on the circles and around them . The pink part of the composition is completely flat witch neutralizes and balances the work.
Matisse
This work is made entirely of organic paper shapes both blue and white that create the contour of a nude women. The entire piece is 2 dimensional and flat in texture. The blue figures have weight that greatly contrast the white ground that they are mounted on. The figure lays big and centered taking up the entirety of the space and is heavy and very focal. The negative space between the forms allow for flow and beautiful visual rhythm. (reversible figure ground relationship)
Magritte
The composition is made up of non organic straight and curved lines and forms. There are several very geometric forms (sphere, rectangles, squares) that make up the composition. The composition is split down the center by the horizon line of the ocean, causing the viewer to guid their vision across the work. There are a lot of horizontal and vertical straight lines that sugest length The sphere is very grounding in the work and heavy in weight, and is a focal point because of its color and roundness in the work. The sphere and square lead up to the curved doorway that is in the left top of the piece. The composition is made up of the 3 primary colors ( red blue yellow ) and black and white to neutralize and tie the piece together.
This add is composed of non organic very geometric form. There is a white circle and rectangle on top of black ground. The focal point of the piece is the coffee in the center of the composition. the colors were kept very simple. black white and brown, The coffee has texture as opposed to the very flat opaque background color. There is a straight vertical line created from the name brand logo on the bottom of the piece and the coffee mug. ( stable figure ground )
